Introduction to R

Date: Friday 27th April 2018
Location: St John’s Ambulance, London EC1
Cost: IoF Individual Member £175, Charity Individual £195, Commercial £250
Booking Contact: Nick Mason, nick@upliftingdata.com

Are you still using SQL and excel for your analysis, and want to move to the next level? R is the open-source data science language that, along with Python, is the tool of choice for most data scientists. It is enormously powerful (and free), with powerful statistical, graphing, and automation capabilities. However that power and flexibility means it has a very steep learning curve, and it feels alien to those accustomed to excel. This course makes that transition easier by providing an easy introduction into the basic syntax and set up of R, using RStudio, how to make sense of the many packages available, and how to set up workflows. We’ll build a simple model, and then showcase some of the more advanced capabilities.

Introduction to Visual Basic for Applications within Excel

Date: Thursday 10th May 2018
Location: St John’s Ambulance, London EC1
Cost: IoF Individual Member £175, Charity Individual £195, Commercial £250
Booking Contact: Victoria Barham, victoria@vbanalytics.co.uk

In this one day course Victoria will introduce you to programming with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) within Excel to enable you to automate repetitive tasks and enhance your reporting. In the session you will be using demographic and behavioral Donor data to build an interactive Donor Report with drop down lists and selection box controls.

This is a practical, introductory course suitable for those who use Excel regularly to a good standard but are looking to further advance their use of Excel through VBA, no previous programming experience is necessary.

Attendees will need to bring their own laptop with Excel (preferably Windows, Excel 2010 or later) installed.  Sample data and all course material will be provided on the day by the course trainer.

COURSE OUTLINE

Introducing Visual Basic for Applications: Beginning with an introduction to the Visual Basic Editor, you will learn how to record a macro to perform repetitive tasks. Victoria will then introduce you to some programming principles to enable you to begin to edit and write your own VBA so that your macros can be even more powerful.

Automating Repetitive Tasks: Using practical examples, you will learn how to use VBA to automate repetitive tasks by editing your recorded code, declaring variables and controlling your code execution using For-Each-Next Loops and If-Then Constructs. This session will include tips on how to add frequently used Macros to your Personal Macro Workbook and how to add them to your toolbars so that they can be used across multiple workbooks.

Controlling your reports with Visual Basic: Adding controls such as Buttons and Dropdown boxes to your reports can make your reports ultra-efficient and work extra hard. In this session, you will learn how to use VBA with these controls to determine what happens when buttons are clicked and values changed resulting in an impressive Donor report tool to answer many management questions.

Creating Function Procedures: Excel 2010 includes more than 400 predefined worksheet functions, in this session Victoria will demonstrate how you can write your own custom functions using VBA.

Course Specifics: Maximum 10 Delegates per session. Light lunch included.

Victoria Barham: Victoria has enjoyed many years working within analytical roles, including over 12 years within the Charity Sector. Victoria provides freelance analytical support with clients including DM Insight, PDSA, Tree Aid, Hope House Children’s Hospice, Marie Curie and The Christie Charity with projects including data preparation and exploration, Campaign targeting, selection, and analysis, RFV analysis, Forecasting models, Lifetime Value analysis, FastStats Excelsior Reporting and Predictive Modelling.
